AC/DC: Australian Mayor Backs Plans For BON SCOTT Statue
February 11, 2006Australia's The Sunday Times has issued the following report:
Fans of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott want a statue honouring the rock legend as part of a planned Fremantle redevelopment.
And the city's mayor is backing the idea.
Of 380 public submissions received by Fremantle council on a multimillion-dollar upgrade of Phillimore St, 345 were interested in honouring the dead singer.
Doug Thorncroft, head of the WA Bon Scott Fan Club, said he could have organised thousands more submissions, but he did not want to crash the council's email system.
He said Pioneer Park, opposite Fremantle train station, was the ideal place to erect a life-sized statue of "Fremantle's most famous son."
"He'd be in the rock 'n' roll stance with the mike in his left hand and his head tilted back with his hair flowing," Mr Thorncroft said.
"Everyone talks about a statue when they are full of piss and bad manners, but I am actually doing something about it."
Scott lived in North Fremantle, attended school in Fremantle and played in several local bands before earning legendary status with Australia's favourite hard-rockers, AC/DC.
Rock 'n' roll excess contributed to Scott's death in 1980. He was buried in Fremantle Cemetery — with his grave becoming a rallying point for fans.
Mr Thorncroft said he would raise money for the $60,000 statue if the council prepared the site.
"I would like to fast-track the project so that Bon's statue is in place in time for his 60th birthday in July," he said.
"It would be a huge drawcard for Fremantle.
"People could put an arm around the statue and have their photo taken with him.
"I don't see why the council wouldn't support the idea."
Mayor Peter Tagliaferri said the submissions were going to be struck out, but the sheer number had made them impossible to ignore.
The proposal has been referred to a public arts committee for consideration.
"Bon Scott is undeniably Fremantle's biggest international export," the mayor said. "A statue of him will be a huge drawcard and I personally am in favour of it.
"More than likely, it will be up and in place before the end of the year."
